LTIS 4303- week 9- Reference Question

I worked with Erin and the question we developed was:

Who is my local (Pickering) MPP and what is their view on domestic violence?

1. Go to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario website.
2. Click Members (MPPs) on the menu on the lefthand side
3. Click on the “find your electoral district” and enter your information and push go
4. The electoral district is Scarborough East/ Pickering, click on Current MPPs in the side menu
5. Sort them by Ridings and find Scarborough East/ Pickering (MacCharles, Hon Tracy )
6.To find what their view on abortion is, click on debates and proceedings in the left side menu.
7. Click on House Hansard Index: Current Session
8. House Speaker Index, choose M for MacCharles
9. Scroll down until you find your topic, in this case, Domestic Violence.

LTCS 2302- week 1- Finding Public Relations

Find Public Relations (PR)  examples used by libraries.  Choose one example and use the OMER format to explain why you think it’s an example of PR for the library.  Cite what you read in the article by Cavill as evidence that your sample is an example of PR.  Provide a link to the example that you found.

Opinion- This is an example of Public Relations done by the North Kawartha Public Library in Apsley, Ontario.

Main Reason- The reason I think this is because it is “getting [their] message out” (Cavill 90), it is letting the community, as well as anyone else who wishes to visit the website, what they do and who they are (Cavill 90).

Example- For example, on the library’s “About Us” page, it explains where the library can be found, what services they have to offer as well as hours of operation and the history behind the library in the area.

Restate Opinion- Using Cavill’s definition of what Public Relations is, I believe that the website for the North Kawartha Library in Apsley is a type of Public Relations.

FWKL 1301- week 12- Placement Blog 4

The technical Services area at my placement is a room on the first floor that has a back door as well as the outside drop off box attached to it. The Technical Services are delivered in-house as well as out-sourced, depending on what the item is and what vendor it has been order from. For example, books coming from Whitehot get full processing including the Cobourg Public Library stamps and spine labels; if the books are ordered from another vendor they come with varying different levels of processing with Amazon at the end, not processing anything at all. Most of the electronic items such as CDs, DVDs and audio books are processed in-house. This is similar to what was discussed in class: differing levels of processing for each different library. It all depends on budget as well as the staff available at the library to do the work. The Cobourg Public Library has co-op students that come in and put spine labels and process CDs and DVDs for the technical services department but the ladies who work there do a lot of this work too.

My job shadow supervisor is apart of OLA (Ontario Library Association) and she keeps her membership so that  she can attend the annual conference. The conference is held in Toronto and the OLA membership covers your entry and she personally has to pay for her membership. She also uses her membership to take courses online through the Learn HQ website.

I loved my job shadow placement and I can’t express enough how grateful and thankful I am to have gotten some hands on work in a Library to find out what I like and what I don’t. It is really important for us as students to learn where we would like to work in the future so that we can tailor our gen-ed courses as well as our volunteer hours and placement hours to what we eventually would like to do in the future.

You have to have your LIT to work at the Reference Desk as well as the Technical Services, the Management jobs are held by people with the Masters Program or LIT with ample amounts of experience. This aligns with what has been stated in class; you won’t be looked at seriously for the position unless you have these programs and degrees under your belt. My supervisor, the Manager of Public Service, has her Masters, she says that the person hiring her said: they look for the person with their Masters, but if they had an internal LIT with the skill set and extensive experience, might be considered for the job. Her job entails: she orders the print collections for the adult section, she is responsible of the cleaning and collection development, she over sees the reference staff, she is also the branch manager, she technically also oversees the children section, and she is in charge of the adult programs, planning and executing.

The positions that require and LIT my supervisor expects a high-level fluency in written and verbal communication; informational interviews need to be able to be conducted over email and phone. There is a lot of helping people with running different databases and programs on their computers as well as the computers at the library as well as in these informational interviews. The bare minimum would be fluency in social media and basic Office programs, the rest you need to be comfortable learning within the first month. Being comfortable learning about the programs and databases used in that particular library is important to my supervisor because if you do not know how to use it because you’ve never encountered it is one thing but if you aren’t willing to learn then you cannot complete the job
